To use WebBuild Express, you first need to install the software on your PC. You should have a Pentium processor with speed of 166 Mhz or faster, at least 32 MB or RAM, and at least 50 MB of available disk space. The Operating system must be Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The PC must have Internet Explorer (Version 5.5 or later) installed.
Once the software is installed, you build pages on your site using the WebBuild Express tools and screens. Building the pages is as simple as placing text and images in cells on the page and arranging the cells for the best possible appearance. The WebBuild Express tools permit you to see your pages exactly as they will look when published.
When you have completed building your site, you can "Publish" it. "Publishing" creates a series of HTML pages in a folder on your PC. You can then transfer the published application to a Web server by copying the files or sending them via FTP.
There is no limit to the number of sites that you can build using WebBuild Express, and you can publish each site as many times as necessary to reflect changes and modifications. WebBuild Express is an excellent tool for sites that have content that changes frequently, for example news items, or special promotions.
Although you need Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (or later versions) on your PC to design sites with WebBuild Express, visitors to your site can use virtually any browser. Everything on the published pages will appear exactly as you designed it on your PC.
Some browsers, particularly Netscape Navigator, do not fully support worldwide standards for Web design, and, as a result, a few features in WebBuild Express won't work for users who use these browsers, which these days is a small minority of the Internet public. These features have to do with formatting effects that you can apply to text and image links, which render the links with a different appearance when the user moves the cursor over them, as in the link at the end of this paragraph. Formatting such links with the "Hover" effect and the limitations of Netscape Navigator to display this effect are discussed in more detail on the Formatting Links page.
These users will still see your Web pages as you designed them and will be able to click on hyperlinks that you have set up; they just won't see the "Hover" effect when they move their cursor over the links.
Viewers with special browser settings may see your site slightly different than you designed it. A visitor, for example, who is sight-impaired may have selected a large text size for his or her browser. The text that appears on the pages he or she visits on your site may, consequently, appear with different text size and cell spacing than you intended. It's a good practice to view a completed site (designed with WebBuild Express or any other tool) in a variety of browsers using a variety of screen resolutions and browser settings to see how your site appears to different potential visitors. |
