Building A Page
Copy/Paste

WebBuild Express has been designed to make the work of the Web site designer as easy as possible. In designing this tool we recognized that often a developer needs to reuse bodies of text, images, formatting, and combinations of these -- in some cases entire pages.

Consequently, WebBuild Express has a number of powerful facilities that let you copy and reuse:

Items can be copied from a page in one WebBuild Express Application to another, making it easy to reuse designs that you've built for one site on another.

In addition, you can save WebBuild Express objects (or combinations of objects) in the "Favorites Library" where they are retrievable with a few keystrokes.

Copying and Pasting Text

Let's start with a small cell that contains some text:

To copy text, first highlight it:

Copy the selected text by choosing "Edit" and then "Copy" from the menu or holding the "Control" key and pressing "C". Next position the cursor where you want to insert the text you have copied. (The text can be inserted in this cell, a cell elsewhere on the page, on another page, or even in another WebBuild Express application).

Here we position the cursor to the right of the text we just copied:

Now we can paste the copied text. Click on "Edit" and then "Paste" on the menu, or hold the "Control" key and press "V". Here's what you'll get:

The copied text is still in memory and can be pasted as many times and in as many places as you like.

Note that you can use this technique to copy text from another application, such as a Microsoft Word document. Select the text in the original document and copy it. Then, in WebBuild Express, locate a position in a cell where you want the text to be inserted, and perform "Edit/Paste" or Control+V. The text will appear as if by magic!

Copying and Pasting Images

Copying images is very similar to copying text.

First, select an image and copy it (Control+C or "Edit/Copy"):

Next, position the cursor at the location to which you want the image copied:

Finally, paste the image to the desired location by Holding Control and pressing "V" (Control+V) or clicking on "Edit" and then "Paste" on the menu:

Note that when an image is copied, all its properties are copied as well, including height and width and any Alternate Text.

Copying Links

Copying links is exactly the same as copying text: Select the link by highlighting it, copy it, click the cursor at the desired destination, and paste.

Links can be copied as part of a block of text.

When links are copied, all of their properties, including the link type, destination address, link formatting, and hover properties are all copied along with the link text or image.

Copying Formatting - Paste Special

It's easy to copy the text formatting from one block of text to another. In the following example, let's copy the formatting of the text in the top cell to the text in the bottom cell, without changing the text itself:

First, highlight text in the top cell. (It's not necessary to highlight the entire sentence, because all the text has the same formatting, but we do so in this example):

Next, copy the highlighted text. (We won't paste the text, just its formatting).

Now, highlight the text that is to receive the formatting from the original cell:

Next, click on "Edit" on the menu, and then "Paste Special...":

On the "Paste Special" screen, click the box marked "Text Formatting" and click the "OK" button:

The formatting has been copied to the bottom cell. The content of the text in the cell is unaffected:

You can use "Paste Special" in a similar fashion to copy and paste other properties of selected items. Use "Images" to paste only the images from a selection. Use "Text" to paste text without its formatting. Use "Text Formatting" to paste the formatting without the original text (as in the above example). Use "Links and Anchors" to paste a link. Use "Hover Effects" to paste the Hover Effects for a link.
Favorites Library  You can copy frequently-used objects or collections of objects to the Favorites Library. They will then be available anywhere on any page in any application on your PC. When you copy an item from the Favorites Library, all the original formatting is retained and all the relative spacing between cells and other objects.

Templates  You can use entire pages as Templates. When you create a new page using a Template, all the content and properties of the original page are transferred to the new page, including page title, search engine data, and style. WebBuild Express includes a number of Templates that you can easily use to get a head start on designing complex pages.
Copying and Pasting Cells

Copying a cell is exactly the same as copying text or images. First select a cell by copying on or just inside its border. (Note that when a cell is selected, there is a thin red border around it):

Next use "Edit" and "Copy" or Control+C to copy the cell. Then invoke paste by "Edit" and "Paste" or Control+V. The copied cell will appear near the upper left corner of the WebBuild Express Design Environment:

You can now move the cell anywhere on the page you like.

If you make multiple copies of a cell and paste them without moving them, they will be placed in the upper left of the WebBuild Express Design Environment, offset so you can see the multiple cells:

You can easily move any of these copied cells by dragging on their visible outer borders.
Copying and Pasting Multiple Cells

You can copy groups of cells exactly the same as single cells.

First, you need to select the cells. The easiest way to select multiple cells is to click on or just inside the border of the first cell. Then, depressing the Control key, click on each subsequent cell that you want to select. (The last cell selected will have a thin red border; all the other selected cells will have a thin gray border):

Here two cells have been selected. Next copy the cells ("Edit/Copy" or Control+C). After the cells have been copied, click on a blank part of the screen to remove the cell selections. Then Paste ("Edit/Paste" or Control+V). You'll see:

The new cells have been placed near the upper left of the screen.

Cut

You can also cut objects on a page. Cutting can be thought of as copying an item and then deleting it.

To cut, select the block of text, image, or cell(s) that you want to cut, and then choose "Edit" and then "Cut" on the main menu. Alternatively, you can hold the "Control" key and press the "X" key to cut an object.

Once an object is cut, it can be pasted exactly the same way as a copied item.

Other Ways of Reusing WebBuild Express Objects

There are two other features in WebBuild Express that are designed to enable a site builder to reuse objects easily:

Tip

If you're copying cells, and Paste doesn't seem to work, it may be because you already have a cell selected. Try clicking on an area of the screen that does not contain any cells. Then repeat the Paste step.
