Emergency Information
In the event a smallpox emergency is declared by the State of Connecticut and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, the clinic for mass vaccinations in our area will be located at the Old Saybrook Senior High School, 1111 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook. The operating hours will be from 8AM to Midnight over the state specified ten day period.

The clinic process will include the following:  Please note that the order (town, last name, etc) that you will receive the vaccination in will be posted to this site at a later date.

Parking will be located in the high school parking area, and an adjacent area.  Local police will guide you to the proper parking area.

The triage (assessment) area will be located under the west entrance overhang, which is located in front of the School. The triage process will be conducted by personnel who are trained to screen the public in the areas recommended by the State, Federal Government and CDC. The mission of the triage personnel will be to identify any people with a potential or actual exposure to a person who has been infected with smallpox. Any exposed people will be triaged to a staffed treatment area where they will be educated, assessed, vaccinated and instructed in aftercare prior to discharge and home quarantine.

The treatment area designated for people that have been exposed prior to arrival at the clinic site will be located on the front lawn of the Old Saybrook Senior High School. The location of this area has been chosen to prevent an exposed patient from entering the school building.  A physician will educate these patients as to the need to be vaccinated, the risks associated with the vaccine and the risks associated with not being vaccinated.

Members of the public who have not been exposed to the smallpox virus will be triaged to the forms distribution area in front of the west wing of the school in a draped off front overhang area in the west foyer entrance. Volunteers will greet you and distribute all forms needed for the vaccination. You will then be directed into the education & form completion area located in the auditorium where you will be given a clipboard and a pen with which you will be able to complete the paperwork.  You will also be shown an educational video presentation about smallpox and the smallpox vaccine.

Upon entering the medical screening area after viewing the educational film, you will receive medical screening and counseling by the medical staff.

When you complete the screening and if you choose to be vaccinated you will exit the east doors of the screening area to the cafeteria and you will proceed easterly down the main corridor to the forms review area. The volunteers here will check all forms for legibility, completeness and lack of contraindications. Once the forms have been reviewed, you will continue easterly down the main corridor and enter the Vaccination Area, located in the gymnasium, via the north doors.

When you arrive at the cluster, you will be asked to read the consent form (if you cannot read, the vaccinator will read this to you). You will then be asked if you understand the consent form. If you do not, it will be explained until you acknowledge that you do understand it. Once you state that you do understand the form, you will be asked to sign the form with a witness present.

The vaccinator will then administer the vaccine and then you will be directed to the Discharge and Forms Collection Area, located in the west half of the gym, where you will need to wait for twenty (20) minutes on the bleachers. Volunteers and health officials will be circulating among the recipients to assist with any needs that may arise. A CDC video will be playing for your further education during this period. After the wait period, you will be discharged through the southwest doors of the gym. At the doors, and prior to leaving, you will hand in your completed forms. At this point you will be given site vaccination area covering supplies, and then you can exit the building and be discharged from the system.
