The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta has also established a public information hotline for questions about smallpox and smallpox vaccine at 888-246-2675; Spanish 888-246-2857; TTY 866-874-2646. The hotline staff has responded to thousands of calls about smallpox and the smallpox vaccine over the past several months.
While the deliberate release of smallpox as an epidemic disease is now regarded as a possibility, at the moment the smallpox vaccine is not available for members of the general public. In the event of a smallpox outbreak, however, the Center for Disease Control has stated that there is enough smallpox vaccine to vaccinate everyone who would need it.
In the event of a bio-terrorist attack triggering a national public health emergency, area health departments will have a plan to vaccinate District 35 populations within a ten-day period.
