You can add miscellaneous files to your WebBuild Express application and link to them from pages on your site.

You might, for example, wish to include in your WebBuild Express site some pages that were part of a previous Web site. Rather than rewrite them using the WebBuild Express software, you can use the "Add Misc Files" feature to include them in your application. You can link to these old pages from your WebBuild Express pages.

Another common use of the "Add Misc Files" feature is to make documents available to users of your site in formats like Adobe Acrobat (.pdf files) or Microsoft Word (.doc). A yacht club, for example, publishes the results of weekly races as an Adobe Acrobat document and links to it from its home page. Another organization publishes a calendar of its scheduled activities as an html document created by Microsoft Word.

Adding miscellaneous files is a two-step process. First, the files must be added to the WebBuild Express application on your PC, using the "Add Misc Files" command on the "File" menu. Second, when you
publish your WebBuild Express application using FTP, make sure you include the "/Other" subfolder, which will contain all the Miscellaneous files you have added.

Adding Miscellaneous Files to the WebBuild Express Application

Choose "Add Misc Files" from the "File" menu:

You will now see a screen that you can use to locate the file you wish to add to the application. In this case, the user will add an Adobe Acrobat file, Race.pdf, that is currently on the PC Desktop:

When you click the "Open" button, the selected file will be placed in a folder called "Other" in your WebBuild Express application.

Uploading Miscellaneous Files to the Server

When you
publish your application using FTP, files that you have added to your "Other" folder will be uploaded to a corresponding folder on the Server. You don't need to take any specific action. After publishing is completed, your files will be in the "Other" folder on the Server and can be accessed at the following Web address:  http://www.WebBuild.net/YourApplicationName/Other/FileName.ext.

Deleting Miscellaneous Files

If you use this feature often, you will eventually get to a point where there may be numerous miscellaneous files on the server that are not needed. To delete them, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the "Other" folder on your PC. It will be at C:\Program Files\WebBuild Express\wwwroot\YourAplicationName\Other\. Find the file that is no longer needed and delete it. It will be deleted from the "Other" folder on the server the next time you publish the application.

Linking to Miscellaneous Files

You can link to a Miscellanous file in your application using the "External Link" feature under "Links and Anchors". For example, if you have used the "Add Misc Files" feature to add a file named Race.pdf to your application, you can create an External Link to it as you can to any other page.

Start by selecting text that you want for the link:

Then click on "Links and Anchors" and then "Create" on the "Edit" menu. You'll see the Links/Anchors screen:

On this screen, make sure that "External Link" is selected. In the "External Link" field type in "other/" followed by the name of the miscellaneous file. You can also format the Hover properties of the link.

When complete, the link will look like the following:

When a user clicks on the link, they will see the Adobe Acrobat file that contains the race results.

Tip

If you use Adobe Acrobat files, your users will not be able to use them unless they have the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You might want to give them a link (like the one shown) to the Adobe Web site so they can download and install the software.
